Hypertrophic pyloric stenosis of the infant is rather rare disease in Korea. During the past 9 years covering the period 1956^¢¥1973, 34 cases of congenital hypertrophic pyloric stenosis were treated surgically at the S.N.U. Hospital with excellent result except one accidental death. Ramstedt operation was the sole procedure employed.
Average age at admission was 41 days of age, and manifestation of projectile vomiting began between 2nd. to 3rd weeks after birth in most cases. The olive shaped mass was palpated in almost all cases and was regarded as pathognomonic. Duodenal perforation occured in 7 cases during surgery but recognition and closure with catgut followed by nasogastric suction for 24 hours lead to uneventful recovery. Recurrence of vomiting following surgery was observed in 18 cases, but none lasted more than 3 days.
Male to female ratio is 4.6 : 1. About 60% of the cases were first-born.
Postoperative feeding schedule used in our department is presented. Also literatures of the subject are briefly reviewed.
